At times, when a family member is suffering, il can be more interesting to undertake a family therapy instead of individual therapy.
When is family therapy more appropriate than individual therapy? Here are a few examples:
- When there is more than one person in the family unit who is suffering
- When one family member is suffering because of the situation of another
- When there is a large change in the structure or situation of the family that could be the root cause of the suffering (ex: moving house, death, divorce, family recomposition, unemployment…)
- When unexpected events arrive that destabilise the family
Family therapy allows the therapist to meet with all of the family members at once in order to better understand the system dynamics. During subsequent sessions, according to the family’s needs and wants, the therapist can then choose to meet with the entire family again or work with sub-groups (ex: just the parents, just the children, one parent and one child, one family member…) in order to refine working hypotheses and work more deeply on certain problematics.
Crises can be scary for most people. We feel lost and without the proper tools to find a solution. But whether the crisis is for one person or concerns the entire family or group, it also gives us an opportunity to take stock of what happening in our lives and make proper adjustments in order to find a more suitable dynamic in life.
Family therapy is an approach that allows more fluidity in order to unlock certain causes of the malaise and one that helps the family regain its own competencies in order to resolve difficulties with which it is confronted.
I meet with family systems in my private office in Wasquehal, just outside of Lille, or I also travel to family homes in the Lille area as well as Paris. The opportunity to meet a family in their home environment is one I treasure as it offers me additional information for working hypotheses.
